More than 12 million people in the United States have sleep apnea, and some types of sleep apnea can be treated with custom-fit mouthpieces from a dentist. If left undiagnosed and untreated, sleep apnea can have serious consequences including high blood pressure, memory problems, weight gain, impotency, cardiovascular disease, and frequent headaches. Some people also experience extreme fatigue or at risk of injury because they have not had quality sleep.
There are three main types of sleep apnea:
- Obstructive sleep apnea: Occurs when the soft tissue in the back of the throat collapses and blocks the airways during sleep.
- Central sleep apnea: Occurs when the brain stops sending the signal to the muscles to breathe.
- Mixed apnea: A combination of both obstructive and central apnea.
People who are at a high risk for sleep apnea include males, overweight individuals, and people over the age of 40 years. However, even young children can develop sleep apnea.
We treat sleep apnea with a custom-fit appliance that helps to keep the airways clear during sleep. Many of our patients who had mild to severe cases of sleep apnea have reported success with the custom-fit mouthpiece and are finally enjoying a good night’s rest. Our treatment method is also very effective for patients who cannot tolerate a C-PAP machine, and for those who suffer from loud snoring with or without sleep apnea.
